Our special, spiritual Lumbini Pilgrimage Tour takes you to the birthplace of Lord Buddha. Born into a royal family, Siddartha Gautam spent the first 29 years of his life in the Lumbini area before renouncing his luxurious life and leaving to live a life of asceticism.  Over 2,600 years ago, it is said that his mother, Maya Devi, gave birth to Buddha under a Sal tree near the Maya Devi Temple on the evening of a full moon.

As the birthplace of Lord Buddha, Lumbini is one of four major sacred sites for Buddhist devotees. Their others are in India: Bodh Gaya (the site of Buddha’s enlightenment), Sarnath (the site where Buddha gave his first teaching), and Kushinagar (a site where Buddha attained Nirvana). As such, the famous Maya Devi Temple was marked by the Indian Emperor Ashoka around the 3rd century CE.

Though Nepal is a Hindu-majority country. Buddhism is alive and well, especially in Lumbini. There is a large zone surrounding the temple in which only monasteries can be built. On our Lumbini Pilgrimage Tour, Visiting the monasteries, you can hear chanting and see monks go about their daily lives.

The Lumbini Pilgrimage Tour kicks off in Kathmandu with an unforgettable flight through the mountains, where we see some of the world's highest peaks Mt. Everest, and all the beautiful Himalayas. The same day, we embark on a sightseeing tour of Kathmandu’s most beloved places (which are all UNESCO World Heritage sites). After this, our Lumbini Pilgrimage Tour begins. An 8-hour drive leads us to the city, which lies near the Indian border. On the first day, we take it easy and check out the World Peace Pagoda or the Lumbini Crane Sanctuary (a favorite of bird lovers!).

The famous Maya Devi Temple and other notable spots are the highlights of the tour. However, it is simply the feeling of being in a sacred place that is so powerful and memorable. Even if you are not a Buddhist yourself, you will find great pleasure in this tour. We not only cover the religious significance of the area, but we also learn about how the culture has changed over the years, and we will be surrounded by natural beauty throughout.

Our Lumbini Pilgrimage Tour is guided by a specialist who has extensive knowledge of Buddhism and the history of the area. Come learn about one of the world’s main religions in the place where it all began!
