Best Time for Thorong La Pass Trek

The best weather for the Thorong La Pass Trek Nepal is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).

Spring (March- May): This season is for experiencing a clear sky, thriving rhododendron, and moderate temperatures. In addition, there will be excellent views of the Annapurna and the Dhaulagiri series.

Autumn (September- November): During this time, there will be stable weather, dry trails, and sharp ground winds. In addition, there will be some clear views of the year.

These seasons provide the safest and most beautiful trekking experience in the Annapurna Region. However, it is better to avoid the Monsoon (June -August) and deep winter (December -February). There will be risk due to heavy rain, landslides, or snow blocks.

The Thorong La Pass Trek is considered moderately to highly challenging, mainly due to the high altitude and long walking days. The highest point, Thorong La Pass (5,416m), requires good fitness, stamina, and mental determination. Beginners with trekking experience can attempt it, but preparation is essential.

Thorong La Pass Trek Map

A trek map is an essential tool for anyone planning the Thorong La Pass Trek. It gives you a clear picture of the route, major villages, altitude gains, and side trails. The trek typically begins from Besisahar and gradually ascends through Manang, Yak Kharka, and High Camp before crossing the 5,416m Thorong La Pass and descending to Muktinath and Jomsom.

Having an interactive or downloadable map helps trekkers track their journey, plan acclimatization days, and understand the geographical layout of the Annapurna region. We provide both digital and printable maps so you can keep one on your phone and carry a backup hard copy for the trail.

Thorong La Pass Alternative Routes & Extensions

The Thorong La Pass Trek is often combined with other exciting routes in the Annapurna region:

Itinerary

Expand allCollapse all

The first day of the Thorong La Pass Trek starts from Kathmandu to Chem, and it's a long trip. This requires travel by jeep for about 9 to 10 hours, about 240 km. Roads can be bumpy, but trust me, mountain scenes, rivers, and the small villages on the road make it worth it.

As you walk high, you will slowly feel changes in the air. The atmosphere in this peaceful small town surrounded by pine forests and mountains looks like a painting. At night, you will live in a basic tea house, no fancy, but warm and comfortable.

You will feel blessed to enjoy the simple and fresh foods of this area. The foods include dal bhat, noodles, soup, and vegetables. If you have energy left, you can do some exploration, maybe talk to the locals, or just look at the stars. They shine here bright.

Day 2 takes you from Chame to Pisang, around 5 to 6 hours of walking and about 13 km in distance. The trail is kinda magical with pine forests, waterfalls, and dramatic cliffs following the Marsyangdi River.

Yes, you'll notice the air getting thinner but fresher too. Further, the views of Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal are just insane, like straight out of a postcard.

Similarly, Pisang is where you feel like you're finally in the heart of the mountains. You'll crash at a teahouse again, basic setup, warm meals like thukpa or dal bhat. It’s great for a night's good rest under the silent Himalayan sky.

On day 3, the route shifts from Pisang to Manang, and the scenery becomes increasingly chaotic. Depending on your passage, low or upper mark, it takes about 6 to 7 hours. The upper footpath is difficult, but gives the killer views of the Annapurna Range and villages like Gyaru and Ngawal.

You will feel the height more today, so hydrate slowly and well. Soon, you will be at Manang.

Manang is just a beautiful Himalaya, which is lively and full of hikers. In some places, there is decent food, bakeries, wi-fi, and comfortable tea houses to relax. It is the right place to relax and soak in culture and cold air.

Day 4 is about acclimatization throughout Manang. There will be fewer crowds, so just adapt to the height. But this does not mean it is boring. You will be mesmerized by the jaw-dropping beauty of Gangapuran Lake or the Annapurna series from the village.

There is also an option to trek to Bhojo Gompa or Ice Lake if you feel fit enough. These small trips help to adapt your body and prevent altitude sickness. After that, you will return to Manang in the evening and rest with hot food.

Tea house stay may bring a chat with other trekkers. Enjoy the night and prepare for further climbing.

Day 5 leads you from Manang to Yak Saline, and the landscape begins to feel more robust and distant. The air becomes thin, and you move slowly. There will be amazing scenes of yak grazing, old mani walls, and small wooden bridges. This place is not very high, but you will feel the height.

Similarly, Yak Kharka is a small settlement with some tea houses. Here you will stay at night and enjoy food. The food is warm and simple, perfect after a long walk. Interestingly, the night gets chill, so the team gets and rest well. Be ready, the hardest days are just ahead.

Day 6 is a journey from Yak Khara to Thorong Fedi, the base camp before the big climb. The path is rocky and narrow, which is accompanied by steep climbs testing the breath and legs.

It requires crossing a wooden bridge and crossing the landslides. So it is important to walk carefully. As you reach Thorong Phedi, you enjoy a robust valley, surrounded by rocks.

It is cold and windy there, and the village is small. Mostly the lodges made for the resting trekkers before the morning substitute. Likewise, you will eat a great meal, sleep quickly, and be mentally prepared for the next day's big challenge. Be excited to cross Thorong La Pass next.

The 7th day is a big day where you cross Thorong La Pass from Thorong Phedi to Muktinath. You will probably start a journey early to catch the sunrise and avoid the afternoon or the wind.

Sadly, the climbing is hard and tricky, where the thin air makes every step difficult. But once you are close to 5,416 meters, the view is untrue. You will be blown away by the good feeling of snow-covered peaks and achievements around.

As you move towards Muktinath, a sacred place for Hindus and Buddhists, the scenery is just magical. The village is peaceful, with comfortable tea houses and delicious food to reward your efforts. Cold nights are expected, but warm hospitality.

On the 8th day of the Thorong La Pass trek, enjoy a beautiful drive from Muktinath to Pokhara. After the days of walking, you like the beautiful Black Gandaki Valley and the mountain scenes from the comfort of a vehicle.

The journey takes about 7 to 8 hours and passes through attractive villages and dramatic landscapes. Yes, Pokhara gives you a chance to rest in the chilling atmosphere at the lake. There will be comfortable cafes, a spa, and yoga sessions after tiring trekking.

Treat yourself with comfort and good food. This is the right way to celebrate the Thorong La Pass Trek.

                  Essential Information

                  Accommodation

Teahouses along the trail provide basic rooms with twin beds and shared bathrooms. Don’t expect luxury, but they’re cozy and welcoming.

                  Food

Meals are mostly Nepali (dal bhat), noodles, soups, and pancakes. The food is simple, warm, and energy-packed.

                  Drinking Water

Bottled water is available but expensive at higher altitudes. Carry water purification tablets or filters to save cost and reduce plastic use.

                  Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is available in some teahouses for a small charge, especially in lower villages. Speed is slow and unreliable as you go higher.

                  Network

Mobile signals (NTC or Ncell) work in a few places like Manang, but expect poor or no signal near the pass. Carry a local SIM for better coverage.

                  Insurance

Travel insurance with high-altitude trekking coverage (above 5,000m) is mandatory. It should also cover emergency evacuation by helicopter.

                  Medical

Basic medical help is available in larger villages like Manang. Carry a personal first-aid kit, and descend immediately if altitude sickness symptoms appear.

                  Thorong La Pass Trek FAQs

                  • Is Thorong La Pass higher than Everest Base Camp?

Yes. Thorong La Pass (5,416m) is slightly higher than Everest Base Camp (5,364m). However, the Everest Base Camp trek involves longer days at consistently higher altitudes, making it more demanding overall. Thorong La is a single-day high crossing, while EBC requires sustained high-altitude trekking and more acclimatization.

                  • Thorong La Pass is considered the highest trekking pass in the world at 5,416m, but it’s not the highest pass overall. Other high passes exist in Tibet and the Karakoram, but they are not accessible for standard trekking. For adventure trekkers, Thorong La remains one of the greatest achievements.

                  • This trek is rated moderate to challenging. The trails themselves are not extremely technical, but the altitude, weather, and long trekking hours make it tough. With gradual preparation, acclimatization days, and physical training, fit trekkers can safely complete it. The toughest day is the climb from Thorong Phedi/High Camp to Thorong La.

                  • On average, the trek takes 7 to 12 days, depending on your route, fitness, and acclimatization schedule. Some itineraries combine Thorong La with the longer Annapurna Circuit, which can last 15–20 days. For shorter options, you can start from Manang and complete in about 7–8 days.

                  • It’s not ideal for absolute beginners, as the trek involves walking at high altitude and crossing a 5,416m pass. However, beginners with good fitness and proper preparation can complete it. Hiring a guide, taking rest days in Manang, and staying hydrated significantly improve success and safety rates.

                  • Thorong La Pass stands at 5,416 meters (17,769 feet) above sea level. This is one of the highest points reached on a trekking route anywhere in the world. Due to the thin air and low oxygen, proper acclimatization is essential before attempting the pass crossing.

                  • Yes. Since April 2023, the Nepal Tourism Board has made it mandatory to hire licensed guides for safety and better trekking experiences. A guide not only ensures navigation but also provides support in emergencies, helps with communication, and arranges accommodations and permits.

                  • You need two permits:

                    • ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) – to enter the Annapurna region.
                    • TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System) – for trekking registration.

These permits are checked at several points, so it’s important to carry them at all times.

                  • The best seasons are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). These months offer stable weather, clear skies, and pleasant temperatures. Winter can bring snow and blocked trails, while summer (monsoon) has heavy rainfall and leeches, making it less ideal for trekking.

                  • Temperatures at the pass can drop to -10°C to -20°C (14°F to -4°F), especially in the early morning. Even in peak trekking seasons, mornings and nights are freezing. Proper cold-weather gear, including down jackets, gloves, and thermal wear, is essential to stay comfortable and safe.

                  • Essential items include warm layers, trekking boots, sleeping bag (0°C to -10°C rated), down jacket, gloves, trekking poles, water purifier, sunscreen, and first-aid kit. Since facilities above Manang are limited, carrying snacks and personal essentials is recommended. A detailed packing list should be followed.

                  • No. Since 2023, solo trekking without a licensed guide is prohibited in the Annapurna region. This rule was introduced for safety after multiple accidents in the past. However, you can trek with a private guide or join a group for cost-sharing and companionship.

                  • On average, the trek costs $800–$1,500 per person, depending on the package. This includes permits, accommodation, food, guide/porter services, and transport. Independent trekkers with a guide may spend less, while luxury options (better hotels, private transport) can cost more.

                  • In peak seasons (Oct–Nov & Mar–Apr), the trail can be busy, especially around Manang and Muktinath. However, compared to Everest Base Camp, it’s less commercialized. Choosing off-season months gives more solitude but comes with harsher weather challenges.

                  • It combines Himalayan scenery, cultural diversity, and adventure in one trek. You’ll pass through Buddhist villages, Hindu temples, high mountain deserts, and lush valleys. The view from Thorong La Pass includes Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Manaslu ranges, making it one of the most rewarding treks in the world.

                  • In normal circumstances, you can cross Thorong La Pass without crampons because the path mostly consists of rocky and snowy terrain. However, crampons may be helpful for better traction on slick ground if there has been recent substantial snowfall or ice conditions. To find out if crampons are necessary for your particular journey, it's a good idea to check the state of the trails and get guidance from local guides or trekking organizations.
