Manaslu Annapurna Trek Duration & Difficulty

The Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Combined Trek typically takes 22–24 days, allowing enough time for gradual acclimatization, scenic exploration, and safe high-pass crossings. The trek is considered challenging, mainly due to long walking days, high altitude, and two major passes — Larkya La (5,160 m) and Thorong La (5,416 m). Daily trekking ranges from 5–7 hours, with 8–9 hours on pass days. The terrain includes steep ascents, rocky trails, suspension bridges, and cold alpine sections. Strong fitness, prior trekking experience, and proper acclimatization make the journey safer and more enjoyable. It’s demanding but extremely rewarding for determined trekkers.

Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Weather and Trekking Conditions

The Manaslu Annapurna Circuit (MAC Trek) experiences diverse weather conditions due to its wide altitude range and seasonal changes. Spring (March–May) offers stable weather, clear mountain views, blooming rhododendrons, and moderate temperatures—ideal for trekking. Autumn (September–November) is the best season, with dry trails, crisp air, and excellent visibility across Manaslu and Annapurna ranges. Winter (December–February) is colder, with snowfall around high passes, suitable only for well-prepared trekkers. Monsoon (June–August) brings heavy rain, landslides, and poor visibility, making trekking risky. Proper planning ensures a safe and rewarding journey.

A Typical Day on the Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek

A trekking day in the Himalaya blends walking, eating, exploring, and resting — simple but unforgettable. Your morning begins with a warm breakfast, packing your gear, and joining the trail. Each day involves 4–6 hours of trekking with plenty of photo stops, water breaks, toilet breaks, and cultural encounters in villages along the route.

On high-pass days (Larkya La and Thorong La), the walking duration increases to 7–9 hours, starting early to ensure safe weather conditions. Lunch is taken in a village teahouse, where you can stretch, relax, and enjoy the local lifestyle. Evenings are spent at a cozy lodge — fresh dinner, sharing stories with other trekkers, reviewing the next day’s plan, and getting a good night's sleep. Every day brings new views, new experiences, and deeper connection with Himalayan culture and nature, making the Manaslu Annapurna Combined Trek both rewarding and life-changing.

How to Prevent Altitude Sickness on the Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek

The Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek is a high-altitude adventure that gradually climbs from Kathmandu (1,350m) through remote Himalayan villages to the trek’s highest point, Larkya La Pass (5,160m), and later Thorong La Pass (5,416m). The route is designed for safe acclimatization, with steady altitude gains and key rest days at places like Samagaun and Manang. Due to the significant elevation, trekkers must walk slowly, stay hydrated, and follow a proper itinerary. With correct pacing and experienced guidance, the altitude is challenging but achievable for well-prepared trekkers.

You can take a short hike to a nearby viewpoint or explore the town. The local views and traditional lives are soothing to witness here.

For your kind information, acclimatization is key to safely continuing the trek. This helps a proper adjustment of the body to growing height and regenerates energy. Enjoy a rest day in Manang and overnight at a local hotel.

The 13th day in this trek is about Tilicho Base Camp and its mesmerizing beauty. So, today’s trek is about 5–6 hours, taking you to Tilicho Base Camp at 4,200 meters. Likewise, the trail offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks.

                                      Essential Information

Accommodation on the Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek

Accommodation during the Manaslu & Annapurna Circuit Combined Trek is mainly in local teahouses and mountain lodges. Rooms are simple but clean, usually with twin-sharing beds, warm blankets, and a dining hall heated by a stove. Higher up, facilities become more basic, but every teahouse offers a safe and comfortable stay after a long trekking day. Staying in teahouses allows you to experience authentic Himalayan culture, interact with local families, and share stories with fellow trekkers — a wonderful part of the journey.

                                      Food on the Trail

Food on this trek is simple, fresh, and energizing — perfect for long days of hiking. Teahouses serve traditional Nepali dal bhat, along with noodles, pasta, soups, omelettes, fried rice, and momos. While you won’t find luxurious meals in remote areas, hot and locally prepared dishes keep you fueled and satisfied. Bringing extra snacks such as protein bars, biscuits, nuts, or chocolate helps boost energy during long climbs or high-pass days.

                                      Drinking Water

Safe hydration is crucial throughout the MAC Trek. Water is available from taps, streams, or teahouses, but it must be purified by boiling, filtration, or purification tablets. Avoid plastic bottle purchases when possible to reduce environmental impact. The best approach is to carry a refillable bottle or hydration bladder and refill it regularly during the trek.

                                      Mobile Network

Mobile network connectivity is unpredictable in the Manaslu region and improves slightly on the Annapurna side. Some days you may get a weak signal at higher points, while other areas may have no network for long stretches. Many trekkers actually appreciate this digital break, as it helps them stay present and fully enjoy the Himalayan experience.

                                      Wi-Fi Availability

Wi-Fi is available in some teahouses, especially in larger villages, but it is often slow, limited, and sometimes only works in the dining room. Video calls, streaming, and fast uploads should not be expected. The limited connection makes it the perfect opportunity to disconnect from screens and connect with nature, fellow trekkers, and local culture.

                                      Travel Insurance (Highly Recommended)

Travel insurance is mandatory for the MAC Trek, as unexpected injuries, altitude sickness, or emergencies can occur in remote areas. Insurance must include high-altitude trekking coverage and helicopter evacuation. It is strongly recommended to purchase travel insurance in your home country, as international coverage is more reliable and easier to claim.

                                      Medical & Safety Preparation

Carrying a basic first-aid kit, personal medicines, sunscreen, blister care, and altitude sickness medication (such as Diamox) is important. While there are small clinics in a few villages, medical services are very limited, and evacuation takes time in remote areas. Preparing in advance and listening to your guide’s instructions ensures a safer and more enjoyable trekking experience.

Fitness & Training for the Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek

You don’t need to be an athlete to complete the Manaslu & Annapurna Circuit Trek, but good fitness makes the journey safer and more enjoyable. Expect 4–6 hours of walking most days and 7–9 hours on high-pass days. The trail includes long ascents, descents, rocky terrain, and high-altitude sections, so training beforehand is highly recommended. For best preparation, begin 4–8 weeks before the trek with:

                                      • Long outdoor walks or hikes (10–15 km / 6–9 miles)
                                      • Stair/ramp climbing to build leg strength
                                      • Light jogging or cycling for stamina
                                      • Core and balance exercises for stability

Trekkers with basic preparation, determination, and a steady pace successfully complete both Larkya La and Thorong La Passes every season.

                                      Gear Rental in Nepal

If you don’t want to carry heavy winter gear from home, Kathmandu offers affordable trekking gear rental and purchase options. Items such as down jacket, sleeping bag, trekking poles, gloves, hats, and crampons can be easily rented for the length of the trek.

However, for comfort and safety, we strongly recommend bringing your own trekking boots from home.

                                      Responsible Trekking Guidelines

The Manaslu and Annapurna regions are not just mountains — they are living cultural landscapes, home to communities who have preserved traditions for centuries. Trekking responsibly ensures that these routes stay beautiful for generations to come.

                                      • Carry a refillable bottle — reduce plastic use
                                      • Stay on official trails to protect fragile landscapes
                                      • Respect monasteries, gompas, mani walls & local customs
                                      • Support local teahouses & shops whenever possible
                                      • Do not litter — keep waste with you until disposal areas
                                      • Avoid disturbing wildlife and grazing yaks
                                      • Trek with patience, kindness & gratitude
